Initiatives for Commonwealth Honors College

Ensuring Student Access and Success 

UMass Amherst has a long tradition of serving first-generation and high-financial-need students. Our vision is to ensure outstanding students have access to the full honors experience, irrespective of their family’s financial circumstances.

Sustaining a Diverse and Inclusive Community 

For first-generation and historically underrepresented students, it takes more than talent and hard work to thrive in college. We seek to expand support for programming like the Emerging Scholars Program, which provides mentoring and a sense of community to students who need it the most.

High-Impact Educational Programs

High-impact experiential learning opportunities, like undergraduate research and study abroad, expand student perspectives and feed their ambitions. Your support will help us make these life-changing experiences available to more students and improve the offerings that elevate the Honors program.

Ensuring Continual Innovation

Innovative educational practices and exemplary faculty set the Honors College apart. With your support, we seek to establish a rotating endowed professorship to ensure the continual innovation of our programs and curriculum for the benefit of our students.

Learning how to thrive in a college environment 

The Emerging Scholars Residential Academic Program gives first-generation, under-represented, and under-resourced students the opportunity to settle into college life with peers, make connections across campus, and receive personalized academic advising and mentoring.

Opening the world to more students

Annaliese Bischoff, professor emerita of landscape architecture at UMass Amherst, created an Honors College scholarship for students with a demonstrated interest in the arts. Professor Bischoff previously served as an associate director, faculty advisor, and seminar teacher for the program.
