Isenberg Finance Professor Models Excellence in Teaching and Research
Mila Getmansky Sherman is constantly engaged in high-level research. She publishes in top journals including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Journal of Portfolio Management on topics such as the global realignment of financial markets. Her academic work includes investigations of academia itself — including a 2022 publication on the underrepresentation of women academics in finance, who comprised a mere 16 percent of finance professors in the top 100 U.S. business schools at that time.
Despite a schedule packed with teaching and research, Sherman mentors both undergraduates and PhD candidates. She also serves as faculty advisor to the UMass chapter of Smart Woman Securities, a national organization focused on educating undergraduate women in finance.
In fall 2021, Sherman’s contributions were honored as she was named the Judith Wilkinson O’Connell Faculty Fellow. The position was funded by Judith O’Connell ’93, managing partner and CEO at Champlain Investment Partners.
In 2024, she was honored with the Fuller and Meehan Endowed Professorship, created by UMass President Marty Meehan and two alumni, John Fuller ’89 and Michelle Fuller ’89. The Fullers and Meehan each contributed $250,000 to the endowment, matched by $1 million from the Isenberg family to create the $1.5 million professorship.
