Spotlight: Sustainable Engineering Laboratories

Promoting and embodying innovation in sustainability

Set to open in fall 2026, the award-winning Sustainable Engineering Laboratories will provide specialized research laboratories to empower interdisciplinary research, serve as a test bed for technologies that address sustainability challenges, and prepare the next generation of engineers.

Initiatives for research, teaching and creative endeavors

Endowed professorships and faculty chairs

Academic faculty form the backbone of a UMass Amherst education. Their research, instruction, and leadership attract students and drive global innovation. We must add endowed professorships to recruit and retain top talent.

Research funding

Ready and reliable funds power research enterprises and set the pace for change. We will fortify our current-use funding and establish endowments that support invention and exploration in a range of disciplines.

Teaching methods and learning experiences

Inspired teaching fuels the student learning experience at UMass Amherst. We strive to continually improve our teaching approaches and learning opportunities across all schools and colleges.

Building for sustainable engineering

The interdisciplinary Sustainable Engineering Laboratories will inspire inclusive design and sustainable engineering. The new facility will be a testbed for renewable energy and grid technologies.

New information and computing building

The Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences is growing rapidly. Its new 90,000-square-foot facility will enable multidisciplinary collaboration and the next big ideas in computing and technology.

Fine Arts Center artist-in-residence endowment

This residency program promotes collaboration among faculty, students, and working artists. Increased support will foster groundbreaking artistic creations, deepen cross-disciplinary learning, and position UMass Amherst as a global leader in the arts.

“Research allows you to step outside the box and gives you the freedom to think creatively about how to solve problems.”
