We will magnify our impact on the common good

At UMass Amherst, we’re ensuring that the common good is much more common. We are actively engaged where knowledge leadership meets community. That’s by design—and it means we listen to our partners, energize collaboration, and provide relevant services to support prosperity and well-being.

Building strong communities through teaching, leadership, and service.

It’s remarkable how quickly a novel idea can lead to real-world impact. UMass Amherst seeks to transform ingenuity and collaboration into opportunities that make a difference in the world.

Your support will enable us to change more lives for the better.

Spotlight: Public Interest Technology Initiative

Responsible tech that advances the global common good

Ethical leadership requires an understanding of technology’s social, legal, and economic implications. Our interdisciplinary Public Interest Technology Initiative supports this need. Its courses, fellowships, and research projects foster the critical thinking skills required to develop ethical tech.

Initiatives for life-changing impact

Libraries and special collections

UMass Amherst libraries are the most-visited places on campus. We must maintain these community hubs, including the W. E. B Du Bois Library, the Science and Engineering Library, and the W. E. B Du Bois Center, so more people benefit from the knowledge they house.

The planned renovation will create a home base for public health and health sciences collaboration. Our goal is to establish a welcoming place for activities now scattered across campus and organize UMass public health under one roof.

Entrepreneurship incubators

Students and alumni create products and services that directly influence the common good. Our goal is to increase the capacity of entrepreneurship and maker programs to give students firsthand experience with stakeholders and end users.

Community outreach and industry partnerships

Outreach takes many forms at UMass Amherst. Our centers and institutes strive to create partnerships that benefit both the university and independent organizations. They explore needs together and provide relevant services in order to strengthen the community.

Athletics

Athletic competition provides multiple avenues for personal development and builds UMass pride throughout the community. Gifts to specific sports or student-athlete services will help us bolster teamwork, well-being, and leadership.

“UMass Amherst has given me a space to carry out cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research with real-life impact on communities that I care about.”
