The UMass Amherst Fine Arts Center's Global Arts Program broadens K-12 students' horizons and deepens their understanding of diverse cultures by exposing them to international performances.
These performances introduce students to worlds beyond their own, fostering empathy, critical thinking, and a global perspective. The Fine Arts Center thoughtfully selects performances that complement school curricula and enhance subjects such as history, geography, science, and the arts, all while meeting the Massachusetts Department of Education's Curriculum Frameworks.
The 2024–25 Global Arts season includes dance theater, contemporary ballet, Afrofuturist music, Korean music, and puppeteering. The center also provides tours of the University Museum of Contemporary Art, Hampden Gallery, and Augusta Savage Gallery for Pre-K-12 students. These spaces offer a range of rotating exhibitions by leading regional and international artists that address compelling issues of our time.
Through enjoyment of various artistic traditions, students develop cultural adaptivity, challenge stereotypes, and expand their creativity. The program offers critical experiential learning that prepares students for an interconnected global workforce. By investing in global arts programming, schools provide students with experiences that inspire curiosity and shape them into informed, empathetic, and globally minded citizens.
